In other role-playing games they go by quests or adventures, here we call them Tales . The Tales of heroic machines or even crimes of the dastardly are not easily shared across Mars. Most satellites and global communication devices in the martian sky are defunct or left in disrepair. Most news travels by short range transmissions, encrypted messages delivered on foot and tales shared around the campfire.
When you run a session I urge you to participate in this robot cowboy tradition. Start your tales around your imaginary campfire, no matter how long or short, here are some tips for starting your session.
- Introduce the setting, the where.
- Ex: Is it a bustling saloon, stranded in a cave during a mighty dust storm or in the middle of an active shootout.
- Feel free to skip ahead in time or jump to your start location.
- Treat this as episodic stories that your players are tuning into this week.
- Who are your characters?
- Ex: Name your yet to be famous or infamous crew.
- Why are y’all here?
- Ex: Did they roll into town to restock on supplies, hot on the trail of a bounty, or laying low after outrunning the Lawbringers.

Before we get started lets lay down some storytelling preferences for the optional Robot Cowboys experience.
- The Storyteller - the player who runs the session, commonly referred to as a Game Master. The Storyteller speaks for the NPCs, guides the other players on their journey.
- Crew, Posse, Gang - these are your party of players and the characters they are role-playing and go on journeys laid out by the Storyteller
- At the start of each play session, the Storyteller gathers the crew around “The Campfire” to start or continue the Crew’s tale, the where, and why they are on it. Don’t worry there will be examples in the Tales below.
